#1. Why do you want an electric bike? Is it to save you time and money nipping through city streets on your daily commute, or maybe for mountain biking with friends at the weekend, or even rough terrain riding, or all of these?
Whatever your reason for buying an electric bike, make sure you choose the right bike for the right purpose to void any problems and disappointments down the track.
#2. Where do you intend storing your e-bike when you aren’t using it? If you don’t have the space to store a full sized bike, then an e-bike with a folding frame will suit your needs better.
#3. The weight of the bike. Do you live or work on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th floor, or even higher? If you do then you will require a bike that is light enough for you to carry without too much effort.
#4. How much power do you need? If you don’t need to travel too far, or too fast, on mainly flat surfaces then a bike with a smaller motor will suffice. On the other hand, if you do need to travel a fair distance quickly, and there are some hills along the way, you will need a bike with a larger motor and more power.
#5. Is the bike compatible with your size and weight? This is important as it will have a big effect on the comfort of your ride. Also, if the bike is to be used by multiple riders of different heights and weights, you will need one with a height adjustable seat, and adjustable handlebars.
#6. Is the bike built to last from quality materials? We recommend buying an electric bike with a quality aluminum alloy frame. This way you can be sure of getting a bike that is both strong and durable, while at the same time being surprisingly lightweight, reliable, and easy to maneuver.
#7. Price & value for money. This can be a tricky one. Just because a bike may be quite expensive doesn’t mean it’s going to be good value, and just because a bike has a lower price point doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to be no good. And vice versa of course.
We recommend ignoring the price to begin with, and concentrating on the other points in this checklist. Sure, you could end up spending a little more than you originally intended, and you could also end up spending considerably less too.
Far better to spend a little more and get the bike that’s exactly right for you, than to skimp on the price and end up with a bike you hate!
#8. Customer feedback/satisfaction. Be sure to check out what people who have already bought and used the bike you are interested in have to say about it. Remember though, the object is to get a true picture of the bike in question, negative reviews about damaged packaging and anything else not directly regarding the actual bike aren’t helpful.
#9. Does it have sufficient working modes? This relates to what you intend to use the bike for. Some bikes are pedal free, throttle only and great for flat city streets, others have a pedal assist mode, usually 3 levels, which are great for additional speed and taking the effort out of hill climbing, and some have pedal only modes which are good for increasing travelling distance.
Select whichever meets you requirements and remember there is no point paying for features which you won’t ever use.
#10. Does the bike have adequate safety features? Always, always, always make sure that the bike you are about to buy has a decent set of brakes. Look for front and rear dual disc brakes which are capable of stopping the bike in all weather conditions on whichever type of terrain you will be using your electric bike. Also, and especially if you intend riding your bike at night,or in other low-lit conditions, select a bike with a good, powerful LED headlight and an electric horn. Some bike also have rear lights too, which is a bonus. Others have rear reflectors and some have reflector strips on the pedals.
#11. Is the bike covered by any warranty? Check to make sure that the bike you are thinking of buying comes with some sort of warranty in case something should go wrong, especially with the motor, or the battery which can be quite expensive to replace. Warranty terms and conditions can vary from bike to bike so be sure to check with the manufacturers.
#12. Always buy from a reputable outlet.
